Do the genealogies in Genesis 5 and 10 contain any gaps?
A. The names in Genesis 5 are repeated in exact order in 1 Chronicles 1:1–4 and Luke 3:36–38, so it might seem there are none. However, if this is true, then one must conclude:
1. That Creation took place around 4000 BC.
2. That the Flood occurred around 2400 BC (1,656 years after Creation).
3. That Adam was a contemporary with Enoch for 308 years and died fifty-seven years before Enoch’s translation.
4. That Seth (Adam’s son) lived to see Enoch’s translation and died just fourteen years before the birth of Noah.
5. That Noah was a contemporary with Abraham for fifty-eight years.
6. That Shem (Noah’s son) actually outlived Abraham by thirty-five years.
However, few conservative Bible scholars would concur with all these conclusions.
B. In Genesis 10 there is at least one gap:
1. Genesis 10:24 tells us that Arphaxad begat Salah who begat Eber.
2. Luke 3:35–36 informs us that Arphaxad begat Cainan who begat Sala, who begat Heber.
C. In Matthew 1, three names are left out.
1. Matthew 1:8–9 tells us that Asa begat Jehoshaphat, who begat Jehoram, who begat Uzziah.
2. 2 Chronicles 17–26 says that Asa begat Jehoshaphat, who begat Jehoram, who begat Ahaziah, who begat Joash, who begat Amaziah, who begat Uzziah.
