Why did God create man in the first place?

God did not create Adam because he was lonely! Some have suggested that prior to man’s creation God had ample opportunity to express many of his attributes. In creating the stars, his omnipotence was shown. In fashioning angels, his omniscience was seen. In judging Lucifer (Isa 14; Ezek 28), his holiness was demonstrated. But one attribute very close to his heart had not been exercised. This was his grace. It is therefore not unreasonable to suggest that God created Adam knowing full well he would sin (but in no way encouraging him to do so). Then, in the fullness of time, he planned to send his only Son to die in man’s place and thus display his marvelous grace! (Rom 5:20; Eph 2:7, 10; Rev 4:11).
