28. What does it mean that God is infinite?

Simply stated, God has no time or space limitations and is bound only by his own nature and will. Both King Solomon and Jeremiah the prophet testify to this (1 Kgs 8:22–23, 27; Jer 23:24).

This attribute also extends to all other divine attributes. For example, God’s love is infinite, as testified by Paul (Eph 3:17–19). Thus:

A. There is no place where God can be found (or “located”).

There is no plotting of his location on a set of coordinates. (Millard Erickson, Christian Theology, p. 273) This of course does not account for those occasions where God specifically informed his people where he wanted them to meet him. Examples:

1. Mt. Sinai (Exod 19:9–11).

2. The Tabernacle (Exod 25:21–22; 29:42–45).

3. The throne of grace (Heb 4:16).

B. There is no place where God cannot be found. (See Ps 139:7–12.)

A Syrian king in the days of Elijah totally misunderstood this attribute. After an initial defeat at the hands of Israel, the king’s advisors counseled the king.

“Their gods are gods of the hills; therefore they were stronger than we; but let us fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they” (1 Kgs 20:23).

But this would not happen! God responded:

“Because the Syrians have said, The LORD is God of the hills, but he is not God of the valleys, therefore [p. 458] will I deliver all this great multitude into thine hand, and ye shall know that I am the LORD” (1 Kgs 20:28).
