What does it mean that God is one?

A. What the attribute of oneness and unity means.

Each attribute is perfectly united with all other attributes, yet maintaining its own uniqueness, identity, and function.

There are many passages in both the Old and the New Testaments that speak of the unity of God (1 Kgs 8:60; Isa 45:5–6; Eph 4:4–6; 1 Tim 2:5). God is not only a Spirit, he is not only a Person, but he is One (Deut 6:4–5). God is not only one, but the ultimate unified one!

B. What this attribute of oneness and unity does not mean.

God is not simply the sum total of all his attributes, nor are these attributes added to God as a woman might adorn herself with various costly gems.
