What does it mean that God is wise?

Its definition:

A valuable distinction between knowledge and wisdom: Knowledge is the accumulation of fact. Wisdom is the ability to rightly apply those facts.

Robert Lightner explores this distinction a bit further: Though very closely related, knowledge and wisdom are not the same. Nor do they always accompany each other. No doubt we have all known those who have acquired a great deal of facts but who lacked the ability to use them wisely. Both knowledge and wisdom are imperfect in man but perfect and perfectly related to each other in God. Only He knows how to use His infinite knowledge to the best possible end. Through His wisdom God applies His knowledge to the fulfillment of His own purposes in ways which will bring the most glory to Him. (The God of the Bible, p. 99)

“With him is wisdom and strength, he hath counsel and understanding” (Job 12:13). “O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!” (Rom 11:33).

A. Its foundation: God’s wisdom is (by necessity) grounded upon his eternality and omniscience. B. Its goal: God employs his wisdom to accomplish a twofold goal:

1. That he might receive the most amount of glory in all things (Ps 19:1; John 9:1–3; 11:4; Col 1:16; 1 Tim 1:17; Jude 1:25; Rev 4:11).

2. That we (the elect) might receive the most amount of good in all things (Exod 33:18–19; 34:6; Pss 33:5; 34:8; 100:5; 106:1; 107:9; Rom 8:28).

C. Its areas:

1. As demonstrated in creation (Pss 104:24; 136:5; Prov 3:19; Jer 10:12; 51:15).

2. As demonstrated in redemption (1 Cor 1:18; 2:13).

D. Its impartation (to believers):

1. Sanctifying wisdom.

This is the wisdom that God desires to impart to all his people (Jas 1:5).

2. Stewardship wisdom.

This is a special gift of the Spirit that God gives to some believers (1 Cor 12:8).
